Alabama Q

February business spotlight is on The Alabama-Q owned by Dwan Ward.

Dwan Ward was always cooking while on duty at the fire department and co-workers enjoyed it so much that they began asking him to cater for family events.  In 2001, he decided to make the catering business official.  Orders were rolling in due to word of mouth referrals so when he was off duty he would use that time to cater events.  In 2005 he began rehabbing houses on the west-side of Cincinnati, mostly in Westwood & Fairmount area. While doing so, he realized there were no "home cooking" restaurants in the area. In 2007, he found a location that would be perfect.  In 2008 he rehabbed the property and The Alabama-Q was born.

YouthWyze was born in June 2008 and actually got its push a year later. A conversation between Shani Pierre and college buddy, Bridgette Cameron sparked the beginning of a wonderful JOURNEY. Shani reached out Bridgette and spoke to her about a business idea of starting a program for young girls called Think Twice (Sexual Abstinence Program) using simulator babies to deter teenage pregnancy. Shani was coming into a lump-sum of money and told Bridgette that this was the year she would be investing in herself. Shani was tired of going to work, coming home and not being fulfilled by what she did.  As soon as she said it, Bridgette said, "Let's do it...I'm in 100%". And that's how they started.

They talked about what was lacking in education for the youth of today so Shani immediately held on to financial literacy education and for Bridgette her niche' was sexual health/abstinence and self-esteem. A third partner Jodi Mathews joined us and blessed them with her background in Career Resources and years of experience working with children. After much thought, Bridgette and Shani came up with the name YouthWyze because the three were heavily involved in our women's mastermind group called WomenWise. WomenWise was created by a dear friend of ours, Mrs. Deborah Stephens. Deborah started WomenWise to offer support, guidance and education to her circle of friends. Bridget and Shani thought, what better way to serve the youth and honor our connection to WomenWise than to name our company Youthwyze. Of course, Shani asked permission from Deborah Stephens for the name since it was so close to the support group she started, she agreed by giving them her blessings, and now they are making history!
